The Medieval city of Bhaktapur is known as the third city in Katmandu Valley after Katmandu itself and Patan.. An hour taxi drive from downtown city or 14km east of Katmandu, is a living gem of Hindu Temples, ancient monuments, pagodas dating back to the 16 century. An ancient Newari town, formerly on the main caravan route between Tibet and India.
The main square of Bhaktapur contains innumerable temples, traditinal art and other architectural pieces like the Lion Gate, statue of King Bhupatindra Malla, the Golden Gate, Basala Temple and more... An intriguing part of thi square is the 15th Century Palace of 55 windows. Walking thru the alleyways, it leads to a pottery & weaving center. Bhaktapur in sanskrit language means "The town of Devotees". It was once the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom from the 12th - 15th Century. One of the world heritage sites in the country which reflects the rich culture, art and architectural designs.
